This quiz was adapted from this source: Snell WE Jr, et al. (1995). The clinical anger scale: Preliminary reliability and validity.

We all get a little angry sometimes. It’s a common emotion and natural response to stress.

But not everyone expresses anger in the same way. Anger can be a powerful motivator, driving you to action that can be helpful or harmful.

It may drive you to be more productive or make positive changes. The American Psychological Association points out that anger can even help you solve problems.

But excessive anger that feels out of control can cause problems. This type of anger can motivate you to act in harmful ways and lead to changes in your behavior and thinking.

If your anger becomes explosive and out of control, you may find yourself lashing out verbally, screaming and yelling at the slightest misunderstanding. Your anger may also come out in physical ways, such as punching holes in walls, throwing or breaking things, or engaging in physical altercations.

People may have told you that you have “anger issues,” but it may be more complex than just being unable to control your anger.

So, how can you tell if your problems with anger go beyond not being able to manage your anger?

If you find yourself wondering whether you have anger issues or why you’re always so angry, anger tests such as this one and the Multidimensional Anger Test — which has recently gained popularity on TikTok — can help you determine whether you have anger problems and might benefit from an evaluation by a mental health professional.

The Multidimensional Anger Test was created by IDRLabs — a site that provides several different types of tests — and is based on an assessment developed by Dr. Judith Siegel, a professor of community health sciences at UCLA.

Siegel suggested that anger is multi-dimensional and can be measured in the following dimensions:

  • duration
  • frequency
  • mode of expression (labeled anger in and anger out)
  • hostile outlook
  • magnitude
  • range of anger-eliciting situations

This test from IDRLabs includes 38 questions reflecting your anger experiences. It’s often used in clinical settings and for research purposes.

This short, free anger issues test is meant for anyone who thinks they may have problems with anger.

The statements in this quiz can help you figure out whether you might need the support of a mental health professional for the symptoms you’ve been experiencing.

A therapist can also help you determine if your issues may be a symptom of a different mental health condition and recommend a treatment plan if necessary.

This online screening is not a definitive tool. It is not designed to diagnose anger problems, such as intermittent explosive disorder, or take the place of a professional diagnosis.

You can, however, use this test as a self-screening tool to track your anger episodes. It also might show your doctor how your behavior has changed from one visit to the next.

Only a trained medical professional, such as a doctor or mental health professional, can help you determine the next best steps for you.
