After a few technical glitches have been finally fixed, I’m proud to announce a number of projects which have recently come to fruition, which will benefit consumers and professionals alike.
The first is a successful transfer of Behavior OnLine from its old, slower server to the Internet server at CMHC Systems, which also serves up Psych Central. This is the first step in a larger partnership designed to bring about additional online projects to make professionals’ lives easier. Behavior OnLine is a unique and friendly gathering place for professionals online. It has a warm, comfortable feeling and a lot of the same people hang out there time and time again. Future projects will include bringing interactive continuing education courses online for professionals. You’ll hear more about this in the Fall of 1996.
The second project just completed is a full U.S. mirror site for The Samaritans, a United Kingdom-based non-religious, charity organization devoted to providing emotional support to those in need. Their free online e-mail service is an invaluable addition to the online world, and one which Psych Central fully supports. In this vein, I am happy to have The Samaritans with us. With a site in North America, access times will be greatly reduced, allowing for people to more easily access their site and their contact information.
Psych Central is a non-profit organization devoted to disseminating online information and education. We would be more than happy to hear from you if you know of other organizations which would like to come onto the MHN Internet server, whether it’s as a mirror site because of the slow trans-Atlantic link, or for other collaborative reasons. We carefully screen potential service providers.
Beginning June 29, 1996, and continuing off-and-on thoughout the summer, I will be offering RealAudio mental health chats in conjunction with Psych Central. This is an experiment in interactive communication online. You must first download the RealAudio software and have a computer with a sound card before you can participate in these chats. Questions will be taken both from the traditional Psych Central at WBS channel, as well as #psych on the Undernet IRC. See my Chat page for information on these two latter items.
The link for the live chat, when it begins on Saturday, June 29, 1996 at 11:00am (EST, -5:00 GMT), will be found on Grohol’s RealAudio Chat Page. I will take questions by people typing them in at either of the above forums (WBS or IRC) and then answer them via RealAudio, along with commentary, chat, music, etc. These may or may not be every week… Depends on their popularity and my time.
Hope to see you there!
I’m also hosting my first Prodigy chat on Sunday, June 23, 1996. Check Prodigy for more information.
If you want the whole shi-bang of over 3,500 separate resources that have to do with psychiatry and mental health online, then you might want to visit Psych Central. It’s the largest and most comprehensive site of its kind in the world and we’re looking to build upon it in the upcoming years, acting as a super guide to mental health online. If you didn’t find what you needed here, look there next!
That’s it for this time… As always, keep in good mental health!
