The process of acquiring new knowledge, understanding, behaviors, values, skills, or preferences, possessed by humans, animals, and some machines. Often involves synthesizing different types of information.

Example: A third-grade student studying cursive penmanship is gaining knowledge in a new skill — interpreting and producing a new writing system.
