One of the three main constructs in Freud’s model of the psyche, the id represents the basic drives and operates by the “pleasure principle”, seeking immediate gratification and enjoyment. The conflicting goals of the id and superego (conscience) are mediated by the realistic ego.

Example: A married man meets an attractive woman at a bar and decides to sleep with her; he is acting according to the pleasure principle, without regard for the warnings of his conscience regarding negative future consequences.
