Therapeutic approaches which downplay pathological aspects of a person’s life, emphasizing dialogue between therapist and client. Examples include Gestalt therapy, humanistic therapy, sensitivity training, existential therapy, and self-help approaches. This group of therapies came to light in the ’50’s and were championed by Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow (well know theorists of the time). The therapies focus on things like personal creative aspects, growth the choices that are made. These types of therapy are generally optomistic in nature because they are not judgemental.
