Have you ever dreamed about a celebrity? During your nighttime slumber, did images of stars like Jennifer Aniston or Brad Pitt float into your subconscious? Did the dream contain intimacy where you and the Hollywood actor shared a special moment?

If the answer is yes, you wouldnt be alone. One of the most common types of dreams people have relate to famous people. We’re talking about movie stars, vocalists, television personalities, and even politicians.

But what do these dreams mean? Are they nothing more than fantasy based wishful thinking? Or, as some suggest, are they about something deeper; like a desire to obtain stardom?

As a counselor, Ive always been captivated by dream content. While I dont pretend to be a Jungian, I do occasionally pull upon his teachings as a pathway to self-insight. It is for this reason I often encourage some of my clients to engage in dream therapy.

So, back to the original question: What do dreams about celebrities mean?

The answer is largely connected to the person you dreamed about. Additionally, the interaction you had with that star also matters.

Example: Lets say you are a woman who dreamed about having a baby. In your dream, you asked the nurse, Who is the father? Minutes later, Chris Evans appears and smiles. Instinctively, you realize hes the daddy.

So, what on earth is that all about? For example, is this your subconscious trying to encourage you to have a child? Or does the dream itself represent an attraction to Captain America?

I cant tell you the answer but I will say this dreams cannot be taken at face value. In other words, its important to look at the content through the lens of symbolism.

A Freudian might tell you this kind of dream is all about the desire to have a strong father figure present because as it turns out you didnt have this growing up.

Hey, I am not saying this is true. Im simply suggesting how some might interpret.

Now if you are a Jungian or a person who engages in the third wave cognitive therapy, the dream could be viewed as a kind of karmic acknowledgment that your body desires a child.

And not to be left out some psychodynamic therapists might tell you that the baby’s physical presence speaks to regrets about your childhood and a desire to be reborn.

Again I am not saying any of these are true. Instead, Im simply showing you the different lenses from which to examine the material.

Here are several quick themes that often pop up in star-studded dreams. Ive bullet-pointed possible meanings, which again are entirely subjective.

Lets say you are a guy and dream about Taylor Swift ignoring you at a bar. Even when you say her name, she acts like you dont exist. This dream could mean:

  • You feel invisible in real life
  • You struggle with self-esteem
  • You feel unimportant

Imagine you have a dream about sharing an intimate moment with a celebrity. The passion is so high that upon waking up, you become upset because the experience abruptly ended. This dream could mean:

  • A real-life desire to get with the star you dreamed about
  • A subconscious projection for a desire to have more intimacy in your life.
  • Boredom with your current partner

What if you have a dream about being a star? For example, you see yourself walking down the red carpet with cameras flashing everywhere. Reporters shove microphones in your face and ask tons of questions. What might this dream be about? It could mean:

  • Problems with self-esteem
  • A desire to be noticed by others
  • Subconscious narcissism projected onto a mental canvas

I could go on forever and a day about different celeb scenarios. But I think you get the point. Rarely is it about the characters. Instead, its about what happened and how the dream made you feel.

Theres an excellent book Id like to recommend that is featured in the Psychcentral review section. Its called Dreaming on Both Sides of the Brain by Dr. Doris Cohen.

What I like about this resource is how it encourages readers to look at the symbolism of their dream through different lenses. In this way, you get a more holistic perspective about what may be going on, deep inside.

In the meantime, dont be afraid to keep a dream diary. Not only is this a great way to practice mindfulness, its also super fun.
