A life blueprint serves as a guide and keeps you on track with setting and meeting your goals and laying the foundations for things to happen that bring you satisfaction and pride in each stage of your life. It doesn’t have to be a document written in stone, it can be fluid and change as you develop and grow. It serves as a guide so you don’t overlook things that are important to you. It keeps you from getting stagnant or having regrets later on when you look back and wish you had done something differently. It keeps you from ignoring an important aspect and then grieving the loss of it when you look back and realize its too late.

You may think you aren’t in a good place right now to have a blueprint, maybe you have children or a very busy career that is all consuming. Having a blueprint is actually most important now for you as these are the times that go by quickly and before you know it 20 years has disappeared without you serving yourself. No matter how busy you are you can squeeze in some steps that will allow you to experience the life you want.

It can actually be destructive not to have a life blueprint. Your brain knows if you are doing the things in life that bring you gratification and experiences that are true to yourself. If you are not, if you are on totally the wrong path you may be experiencing anxiety, anger and even depression. Pent up regrets and resentments catch up with you over time and have to be released somehow. They can damage relationships and make you very unhappy. They can make you eat, drink or whatever to extremes in order to try to tuck them back away. Having a blueprint that addresses the real you is a relief and can free up positive energies.

Your blueprint is made up of all the compartments or areas involved in building the life you envision for yourself. There will be many facets to consider such as these:

  1. Financial matters
  2. Relationships-family and romantic
  3. Friendships-social
  4. Health and wellbeing
  5. Career
  6. Educational goals
  7. Intellectual pursuits
  8. Recreational pursuits
  9. Spiritual matters
  10. Parenting goals

Each of those areas is important and you will want to include things that address all of them. It is easy to get caught up in one aspect of your life and not pay attention to others. Rather than this causing resentment, anxiety and regrets, having a plan in place for all of it allows you to go with the flow of things knowing it will all balance out someday.

As many of you may be familiar with my topics, eliminating emotional baggage is one of my favorites as baggage is such a detriment to people’s lives. Emotional baggage can greatly impact the direction of your blueprint. If your blueprint is based in dysfunctional thought patterns or cognitive distortions it may be a “false blueprint“. If low self esteem and self confidence haunt you they will alter your blueprint by limiting what you reach for or what you think is possible. If you are listening to limiting beliefs your blueprint will be drastically different than the one you should be developing.

This false blueprint may be built on desires, goals and ideas that don’t really reflect you at all. You may believe that the things you want are not attainable as you are not “good enough or smart enough”. You may experience crippling fear when you even think about the things you really want compared to the direction you are now headed.

It is never too late to change course. It is fine and actually desirable to do so no matter where you are before you waste another minute of precious time. I recommend treating yourself to a “scary dream sitting“. Grab some paper or your laptop and get together a list of things you want to accomplish based on the items listed above. Don’t limit your ideas by thinking through them right now, just get them out before you stifle them away. You can figure out the hows later, just get them out there where they are real for you to look at. It is hard to address them while they are jumbling around in your head.

By getting them out you can see where you are versus where you want to be. You can then examine each and decide why you aren’t there and what you need to do to get there. For example you may need to learn some skill, maybe change how you are approaching friendships or lose some emotional baggage that interferes with your ability to trust others in order to find a good partner. Drawing your path makes your obstacles stick out so you can deal with them directly.

If you have experienced a dysfunctional family background or other unfortunate event that interfered with your emotional development it is time to stop allowing it to ruin and dictate your life. You didn’t choose for that to happen but you can choose now and dictate the terms of the rest of your life. There is always a way to get where you want to go.
