I’d like to talk about Disappointment with a capital D. It’s a sharp stomach wrenching sadness, an ache, a yearning for things to be different than what it is.
I can recall rejection letters, relationships, careers, and travel plans that didn’t work out. At the time, it felt like disaster, devastation and dismay, but what I didn’t know was that disappointment would turn into discovering a new way of living my life, if I was courageous enough to let it.
How do you cope when life has different plans for you? How do you render your dreams with the reality in front of you? The way you deal with disappointment is the way you deal with life.
Yes we may want to bang our fists on the ground and scream like a 2-year-old, but if we can mourn the loss and find acceptance, we’re likely to spend less time in misery and suffering and more time in the unexpected gifts in our lives.
The job I didn’t get? The relationship that didn’t pan out? The opportunity that passed me by? Thank god I didn’t get them. If any of them had worked out, I wouldn’t have had the amazing life I have now.
