Stop the Drama: 3 Reasons Facebook Is Ruining Your Life
Facebook is, after all, the villain in our lives.
A recent article detailing Facebook’s role in the demise of women’s self-esteem came as no surprise. Facebook is after all, the villain in our lives. It is a virtual bulletin board of our possessions, a bragging battle ground and an undercover detective’s most prized tool.
Is Facebook the root of the dramatics in your own life? Here are four different kinds of drama’s that can spark from Facebook — have you been a witness to any of these?
- Relationship Drama: How many Facebook fights have ensued as a result of pictures posted and mysterious likes from female friends? I know a couple who routinely check and scan each other’s Facebook accounts for suspicious activity. Now, is Facebook serving as this couple’s scapegoat for underlying trust issues? Absolutely, but they will never truly connect, communicate and repair their relationship because their virtual lives have sucked up all of their time and wasted energy.
- Breakup Drama: There is no clearer indication of the finality of your relationship than to have an ex’s status change to single. Sadly, this nifty marker is how many of us find out that we too are officially back on the market. The old motto, “out of sight, out of mind,” is no longer a possibility unless you possess the ultimate skills in self-control. Instead, many of us, turn into undercover officers as we click, scan and muddle through mutual friends until we find the proof (as in pictures of our ex’s new eye candy) we needed to further torture ourselves in the midst of our mourning. Break up rule #1: Get off the virtual heartbreak train or risk inevitable derailment!
- Personal Drama: In the competition of life, Facebook is the evil barometer. Just come home from a fantastic first date? Log on and sift through the engagement, wedding and baby pictures galore to instantly feel inferior. Did you have one of those life beat you down kind of days? Now’s the perfect time for a bombardment of your 400 closest friend’s world travels, monumental accomplishments (because isn’t everything epic on Fakebook?) and cheery posts–take that self-esteem! I can’t remember the last time I heard someone say, “I was having a crappy day but a quick Facebook session made me feel so much better.” And if you are one of those people who take your woes online in the form of pitiful posts and rants, please stop. Log off and call a real, live friend because nobody actually likes it, no matter how many times they hit that fake button.
If you are looking to lighten your spirits and quit the contest, delete your Facebook account and live your best life off the Internet!
