Former Friend Has Symptoms of a Mental Health Disorder

Asked by on with 1 answer:

Me and a guy both used to be friends with this girl. Around the same time she fell out with us both because of similar reasons. However, recently we’ve been talking a lot her mental health. She posts stories which are based on her life in which she refers to delusions and hallucinations of scary creatures. She’s very manipulative and she told us, this may not be true, that she used to not be able to eat because it used to make her sick. Neither of us are friends with her now but we don’t want to just ignore the fact that she has symptoms of mental illness. However, neither of us are quite sure what we should do. Do we confront this girl or talk to a professional to find out more first. We would greatly appreciate your help, thank you.

Confrontation involves a hostile interaction between two opposing parties. Confrontation, in this situation, would not be a good idea. I don’t think you meant it in that way.

Perhaps what you are asking is whether or not you should approach her about your concerns. That might not be a good idea either because you and she are no longer friends. She may not welcome unsolicited advice about something so personal.

It might be a better idea to discuss your concerns with a school staff member or another trusted adult. This could be the guidance counselor, a teacher or the principal. If you choose not to, then your parents might be able to help.

It is good that you care about her well-being. The next step will be communicating your concerns to the right people, who will be able to help. Please take care.
