Treating Depression Symptoms

Thank you for writing in. There are many things you can do on your own to help ease the burden of depression, however, for severe or chronic symptoms, professional treatment is warranted.

Eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise has shown to be very effective in alleviating depressive symptoms. Taking an honest look at your internal self-talk and learning to replace negative thoughts with more positive and hopeful ones is also very important. Keeping a journal of your thoughts and feelings will help you change the patterns. Most people with depression tend to be very self-critical and pessimistic. Finding things about yourself and your immediate situation to be hopeful about can go a long way. Other things that can be helpful are self-help books, yoga, mindfulness practices and doing activities that put your focus outside of yourself, such as volunteer work. And finally, some people find relief with holistic focused treatments such as acupuncture, homeopathy and herbal supplements.

I hope my suggestions help, but please don’t rule out seeking professional help. Depression is real.

All the best,
