WebMD Aquires What's Left of Medscape
With drkoop.com securely out of the way in bankruptcy proceedings, and with Medscape bailing out of its deal with CBS (notice there is no "CBS Healthwatch" Web site since early November!), WebMD snatched up what was left of Medscape's assets for a song. So if you're playing along in the e-health game, it goes something like this:
- WebMD acquires Onhealth (the #1 consumer health site at the time)
- Mediconsult acquires Physicians' Online
- Medscape acquires Medicalogic
- Medscape becomes CBS Healthwatch portal
- drkoop.com tries everything to stay alive, makes numerous acquisitions
- Mediconsult goes belly up, Physicians' Online goes private
- Medscape gives up CBS deal
- WebMD acquires Medscape

Bye Bye drkoop.com
After having left them as abruptly as I joined them in 1999, because of their reliance on advertising and letting sponsors not only influence advertising, but also dictate content decisions in the mental health section of the Web site, drkoop.com is finally biting the dust. The Washington Post has the scoop. Via doctom.com.
I gotta say, it feels good to outlast the big corporate health sites who don't know a damned thing about quality content and editorial bias. I'm sure the few employees left won't find this a very joyful Christmas present.

Hello New Mental Health Net, Goodbye Old!
I see that MHN finally released their update to their Web site, which constitutes about 2 years worth of work. Looks good, but I can't help but notice that specific links to every single resource within the site are now broken. When switching over to a new technology or organizational structure, this doesn't have to be the case. The Web server can be directed to send the person to a program, which can piece together where the user is trying to go, and redirect them directly to the new URL if need be. In MHN's case, that means that thousands of links which pointed to "deep content" within the site are now nonfunctional and will need to be updated. A shame, but I guess that's the price you pay for progress.

What Do Articles Like This Mean?
Consumers not flocking to online services after the WTC attack, but with a survey of just 3 organizations, it's hardly scientific (or worth drawing any conclusions from). HelpHorizons.com has seen an increase of the use of its services since after the attack.

C-Net's Series on the Online Medical Industry
C-Net has a great new series about the online medical industry. This special report details how online companies have underestimated the monumental difficulties of integrating the massively outdated technologies used to run the medical business; how old-line businesses are now coming online; and how the physician culture is pushing back against the changes.
