Stevens, N.J. Sea Grant to host coastal management workshop
Event will cover benefits of real-time ocean and weather observations
Hoboken , N.J. -- Stevens Institute of Technology and N.J. Sea Grant Cooperative Extension in Coastal Processes will host a N.J. Sea Grant Stakeholders workshop, "Improved Coastal Management, Preparedness and Response Through Real-Time Weather and Ocean Observations," on July 27 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. "The workshop is designed to elicit feedback on desired real-time data products from the atmospheric and coastal ocean observing systems deployed in New Jersey ," said Thomas Herrington, Associate Professor of the Civil, Environmental and Ocean Department and Stevens' Davidson Laboratory. The keynote speakers are Mr. Joe Picciano, Deputy Regional Director, FEMA Region II; Dr. Alan Blumberg, Chair, Department of Civil, Environmental and Ocean Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology; Dr. Bruce Parker, Former Chief Scientist, National Ocean Service; Ms. Heidi Hoppe, Hydrologist, New Jersey District , US Geological Survey; and Dr. David Robinson, New Jersey State Climatologist, Rutgers University.
The U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy's Ocean Blueprint for the 21 st Century recommends the creation of sustained ocean monitoring systems to improve everyone's understanding of the coastal environment; this will enable sound decisions to be made on the best way to restore, protect, and sustain our limited coastal resources in the future. New Jersey universities, colleges and state agencies are presently developing and operating ocean, estuarine, and atmospheric monitoring systems. Most of these systems record and transmit environmental data continuously, which provides a unique source of data that has a much greater potential than simply monitoring current conditions. Through the provision of the value-added processing, the data have the potential to improve public safety, security, health, commerce, economic opportunities, recreation and other quality of life aspects that we are just beginning to realize.
The workshop will discuss the potential benefits of the use of real-time ocean and weather observations for improved coastal management, preparedness and response. Participants will have the opportunity to learn more about the monitoring systems presently in place in New Jersey and help identify future measurement needs and potential value-added date products that will aid in their daily professional activities.
