The Curitiba Virtual Biodiversity Conference

Citizens of the world invited to play a role in biodiversity conservation

The purpose of the Virtual Curitiba Biodiversity Conference (VCBC) is to gather opinion from the broad and diverse groups of stakeholders and interested parties regarding "how" and "what" actions should be taken to achieving the 2010 Biodiversity target. In addition, the VCBC will also gather views regarding "what" should be done in the long run after 2010.

The VCBC represents the first ever "mega" consultation process that utilizes internet communication technology to seek views and provide a framework for an electronic debate of the civil society prior to a meeting of a Conference of the Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity. Through the CBD Clearing House as well as electronic linkage with existing networks (such as IWLEARN, UNEP.NET, Infoterra, etc), it will involve government and non-government organizations, indigenous and local communities, women, youth, scientific and expert networks, academia, business networks, local communities, and other interested segments and groups in an open dialogue. The outputs of the resulting discussion will be summaries and presented to the High Level Segment of the Eight Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity.
