BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University and Purdue University are two of the nation's 10 "Best Places to Work in Academia," according to an international survey of 1,456 researchers by The Scientist magazine.

An accompanying article in the magazine's Nov. 8 issue, "Best Places to Work: What's Important to the Academic Scientist?" reveals that American researchers are primarily interested in university health benefits, tenure policies and fair, competitive salaries.

More than 60 U.S. institutions were named as desirable employers by those surveyed. At the top of the list were:

1. California Institute of Technology
2. Purdue University (Ind.)
3. Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (Wash.)
4. Univerity of Nebraska-Lincoln
5. Cornell University (N.Y.)
6. University of Delaware
7. Univerity of Michigan
8. Fox Chase Cancer Center (Pa.)
9. Wadworth Center (N.Y.)
10. Indiana University
