The National Academy of Sciences will hold its 141st annual meeting, at which new Academy members will be elected. ELECTION RESULTS will be available on April 20 at noon EDT on the Web at http://national-academies.org. Reporters can register in advance to receive the list of new members via e-mail.
The meeting also will feature the NAS president's annual address to members, an award ceremony, and symposia. These events, which are open to the public, will be held in the auditorium of the National Academies building, 2100 C St., N.W., Washington, D.C.
APRIL 19, 8:30 A.M. – NAS President BRUCE ALBERTS will address the members. His speech will be webcast live at national-academies.org. (The webcast requires RealPlayer software, available free at http://www.real.com/player.)
APRIL 19, 3 P.M. TO 5 P.M. – GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE. At this public symposium, panelists will discuss several aspects of climate change, such as Arctic warming and the extent to which observations of the sun have influenced our interpretations of global temperature increases since the late 1970s.
APRIL 19, 8 P.M. TO 9 P.M. -- AWARD CEREMONY. Recipients of NAS awards in 2004 will be honored, including MAURICE F. STRONG, who received the Academy's most prestigious award, the Public Welfare Medal. A reception will follow from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m.
APRIL 20, 2 P.M. TO 5 P.M. – MICROBES IN TIME AND SPACE. This symposium will consider the epidemiology of evolutionary changes in microbes. Presenters will look at recent incidents, such as the SARS outbreak, that illustrate how swiftly such changes can occur, and examine the implications for global public health.
