AGI publishes 42nd edition of Directory of Geoscience Departments

02/02/04

The latest annual edition of the Directory of Geoscience Departments (DGD) -- providing key information about college and university geoscience departments in the United States and in 21 countries -- has been published by the American Geological Institute (AGI). This valuable reference, produced by AGI since 1952, is the most comprehensive directory of its kind for the geoscience community and is a "must have" for both personal and library bookshelves.

The Directory of Geoscience Departments, 42nd Edition, provides an alphabetical listing of 1,047 geoscience departments. This year, the list of geoscience departments outside the U.S. has expanded to 107 departments in 21 countries. In addition to information about college and university geoscience departments, the Directory of Geoscience Departments includes listings of U.S. federal agencies that employ or are of interest to geoscientists, all U.S. state geological surveys, field-camp information, and faculty e-mail addresses. Other valuable features include departments that are AGI Academic Associates, the year of the most recent departmental update, and the most recent enrollments and degrees granted.

Two significant changes are reflected in this edition of the Directory of Geoscience Departments. Beginning this year, the Directory of Geoscience Departments will be published to coincide with the calendar year instead of the academic year. Because data collection occurs several months before going to press, the shift in the publication cycle to a calendar year will make it possible for geoscience departments and new faculty members to submit updated information at the start of the new academic year. This will improve the currency of the listings in the Directory of Geoscience Departments and provide more accurate enrollment numbers.

Additionally, this is the first edition of the Directory of Geoscience Departments where individuals were given the opportunity to update their own records, in addition to the official departmental representative. This change resulted in the direct updating of 6,168 faculty and staff listings in the directory, including verification of all e-mail addresses. More than 280 departments updated their departmental records.

Published in soft cover, the 578-page Directory of Geoscience Departments, 42nd Edition (ISBN 0-922152-69-1; ISSN 0364-7811), is available from AGI and can be ordered online or by mail, fax, or telephone. The list price is $40.00 plus shipping and handling; members of AGI member societies are eligible to purchase one copy at 20% off list price. All orders must be prepaid. Please make your check or money order, drawn on a U.S. bank in U.S. funds, payable to the American Geological Institute. AGI also accepts VISA and MasterCard. Orders are sent by UPS Standard Service, whenever possible, and take two to three weeks for delivery. I've wrestled with reality for 35 years, Doctor, and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
