Perseveration

An inability to switch ideas along with the social context, as evidenced by the repetition of words or gestures after they have ceased to be socially relevant or appropriate.

Example: Asked for the day, the patient says it’s Sunday. Subsequent questions about month, year, and place are all met with the same reply.
