  1. Take a look at paxilprogress.org, a non-commercial patient support Web site for withdrawal from all psychiatric drugs, not just Paxil.

The stories are heartbreaking. Patients cannot find clinicians, even psychiatrists, who understand even the basics of tapering. This is not a difficult concept, but the propaganda extolling these drugs has been so effective doctors just haven’t considered techniques for safe withdrawal. They don’t “believe” in withdrawal syndrome — as though it were an article of faith.

Psychiatry claims success only by ignoring adverse effects of the drugs it purveys. It’s a disgrace to medicine.

  2. Yes, they are addictive. The withdrawal symptoms are grisly. It’s better to take heroin.

And see ssrisex@yahoogroups.com. The estimated rate of people on SSRI’s and SNRI’s who have sexual side effects (like not being able to have an orgasm, ever) is 30-70%. Thirty to seventy percent???? That has no meaning at all.

Some people aren’t able to ever get their orgasms back after quitting the SSRI. Apparently the SSRI action on the serotonin reuptake receptors makes permanent changes, so you keep on having extra serotonin in your system (extra serotonin keeps your brain from releasing norephinephrin, which is what causes the orgasm). It’s enough to make you want to try a little home brain surgery.

I feel especially bad for young people who were put on SSRI’s and now can’t have a normal sex life.
