In case you were wondering, yes, online therapy or e-therapy or online counseling is billable to insurance companies under the CPT code 0074T. This was released in January, 2004.

Hi All,
There is no code that can be used for therapy over the phone. All psychology codes are face to face. I am wondering if there is a consultation code that can be use, but the therapist will have to determine which one since we wont know what the context of the conversation will be.

I too am looking for a cpt code for individual paychotherapy by telephone. I have heard that one exists. Winny Lee (above) wrote in Sept 2009 that there was none. Bit it is now September 2010. Does anyone know if one has been added? Thanks. (I hope)
It is odd that there is an online cpt code but, not for phone. I believe that one has been added; i don’t know it though.
Yes, there are telephone session codes. They are as follows:
performed by MD- 99441 (5-10 min) 99442 (11-20 min)
99443 (21-30 min)
performed by non-MD- 98966 (5-10 min)
98967 (11-20 min) 98968 (21-30 min)
Telephone sessions cannot be billed if the conversation refers to prior E/M service performed in the past 7 days, or if the discussion leads to an E/M visit in the next 24 hours or soonest available appointment.
Another thought: the telephone session codes are not reimburable by insurance companies. We bill these directly to the patient.
