Reducing the stigma associated with troops seeking treatment will continue to plague all efforts. I am a Marine veteran of multiple combat deployments, a woman and now a full time student. I plan on dedicating my life tohelping troops. Growth can occur after trauma but only with help.
I agree that reducing stigma associated with getting help is absolutely necessary. I will add that you likely have a problem before the post traumatic stress kicks in with many of these soldiers. I think there are many that join with a “noble death wish.” It is not a bad thing it just needs to be dealt with properly. In my opinion if the military would stop discriminating against those who take medication for psychological problems they could really utilize an amazing group of people who, in a way, were made for the military!
I am glad they are trying but these efforts are a far cry from where they need to be.
The only people who were “made for the military” are the type of sociopaths who don’t mind killing other people. Any reason you give them will suffice. The others that join are there for a myriad of other reasons, non of which will protect them from the psychological torment they are bound to live with for the rest of their lives.
War is simply unnacceptable. If alternatives are never found, then we have failed as a species.

You’re right. War never solved anything except fascism, communism, genocide…
We “sociopaths” are willing to put their lives on the line so you can insult us; you have the very freedom to stand in the street and denouce them, wave your Bush = Hitler signs, and rant because of the sacrifices millions of Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Airmen like me have made for you. I have served for over 20 years and am sick and tired of people with your attitude. Grow up. If you hate the military so much, move to Costa Rica where they don’t have one.

Certainly a laudible effort. This issue should take us all beyond the politics. Caring for the well-being of others is not a left/right issue. May this be one possible solution among many.
To whoever said, “War is simply unnacceptable. If alternatives are never found, then we have failed as a species.” Here’s why an alternative has never been found–any country/civilization/tribe that thought they had found an alternative was then taken over by another who didn’t consider having an alternative!
