Dear Sirs: I will validate the above article, because in my experiences,it is the human being, who reaches out to help you, give you support, understanding, real help, that keeps a very suicidal person from jumping off a 3 story building. But,this person has to KNOW what they are doing, and not preach; this person has to connect with the suicidal person, not b.s. him,go thru it with him(to some extent,)and tell him”it is not always going to be this way.” Suicidal people NEED that type of skilled, sincere, person to connect to them, and help them thru it. Help them to learn to ignore the impulses of suicide, and go for help, when they need it. ASK FOR HELP. TALK to people, who can listen understand and help.
Yes,talk therapy can help suicidal patients. Why?Because the main thing we ALL NEED,is human, real connection to get thru our pain and trials. ALL of us need that,so it makes sense that a very sick, hurting, and hopeless person needs that EVEN MORE. All he can see, is dark and black;he needs someone to show him the other side, and where there’s light. “You are not always going to feel this way.” If you have internal pain, hurt, anger, you NEED very loving, sincere, and skillful people to help you get thru it,and past it. Drugs alone cannot do this. People do this.
I had to go into a very good teaching hospital,in San Francisco, for years,as I was that sick, for a long time.It was the doctors, nurses, occupational therapists, psych technicians, who all helped me get thru it. They were very skillful, true, but they also really cared about their patients.Very, very much. Professionals who do care about their patients, foremost, are the most effective in helping them. Yes,they must be good, very skilled. But mentally ill people can tell, even when they’re sick, when people care about them, and are helping them. It makes a huge difference.
