8 Benefits of KissingIn a recent feature on this website, Valerie Reiss lists eight health benefits of kissing.

I was especially intrigued to learn about kissing’s power to lift the mood. Demirjian explains that kissing stimulates the feel-good chemicals in the brain, mainly serotonin, dopamine and oxytocin.

So what are the health benefits of kissing?

  1. It is my understanding that the hugging process puts two human bodies front on close together such that together the two people massage each other’s vagus nerve at the esophageal plexus. The Vagus Nerve is said to be the tenth cranial nerve; as such it forms a stimulating process for release of dopamine and oxytocin.

  2. But what if you don’t have someone to kiss? It’s not like you can just walk out and kiss or hug someone…:’(
    Luckily, I can hug family members and friends (and kiss them, on occasion, in the usual, non-romantic manner – which is wonderful nonetheless), but let’s face it: It’s very different from the more “involved” kissing of a romantic partner!
