It’s impossible to write a blog post about mental illness without confronting the violence that has descended on this country all too often. Too many innocent victims have fallen at the hands of too many offenders to set the issue aside.
My heart bleeds for the victims lost and the loved ones remaining. Nothing written can take away the pain of the survivors. But a call to action may help to prevent such crimes from continuing.
The offenders in these incidents are often troubled and plagued by recurrent mental illness. The tragedy begins when our mental health system fails these individuals and their families as they seek help that is sometimes unavailable.

George, Thank you for the thoughtful and heartfelt article. As a former student of mine – I have been learning from you the past several years. Again, thanks!
George as your father, I have witnessed thru the years your pain and strugle with your mental illness. You have demonstrated that the right Doctor right meds and the will to function in a world of denial stigma and the lack of proper health care , can be accomplished. I am proud you are my son and I love you with all my heart.
The media hasn’t been able to dig up one person who could say Adam was ever a good person. The stigma is created when people immediately want to attribute every heinous act to mental illness without the facts. Mental health profesionals on tv should be ashamed of themselves for even appearing when they know nothing about this guy. It’s fearmongering at its finest, and that’s wrong.
Mental illness doesn’t alwways explain bad things. Sometimes people are responsible for their heinous actions. Not sure why Jeffrey Dahmer ate people, but he did. I’m not sure mental health care will solve the problems of people who don’t appear to have a conscience.
