Is Lack of Communication a Red Flag?Over time I’ve learned to confront the infamous “red flags” when it comes to the dating world.

There may have been a tiny voice inside my head that said “this doesn’t seem right,” but because I didn’t truly want to believe that was the case, I’d push it aside and move on. Well, one of the more pet-peevish warning signs that always left me clueless was when the other person (in my situations it was a guy, but I don’t want to target the whole male species here) could not express how he felt.

It’s also unfortunate when the silence goes beyond just articulating feelings, and he simply can’t communicate… at all. Your messages and texts go ignored, and you’re left wondering how you didn’t foresee this issue to begin with.

We all know communication in relationships is important, but in the early stages, is a tight-lipped manner a red flag signaling you to run the other way?

  1. This entire post set of a “green flag” for me. For one, I am a Communication Studies major; I research, write, blog, read, and talk about the interpretation of interpersonal communication. Two, I am a male who has been in various types of relationships so I have some experience in communication in relationships. Three, I am in the process of writing an eBook about the communication involved in the beginning stages of a relationship that focuses on how we view identity, uncertainty, and attraction.

There can be many reasons for a lack of communication in a relationship. I was nodding my head when reading about how we all use different communication styles. It’s important to understand that even though a guy might be quiet and not saying anything, it’s not because he has nothing to say. Sometimes it’s just a matter of finding out how to make someone open up more to get them to disclose their thoughts.

It is funny because I see a lot of women becoming more comfortable talking about, and participating in, two male dominated areas: sports and video games a lot lately. This is all just a personal hunch, but I think it is because females have a strong er tendency to want to communicate than males, so they are more likely to pick up on the habits that males are into as a way of creating a common ground for communication to occur.

Well, great post. I have more thoughts on this but I have to get back to studying.

  2. In typical american culture of middle to upper class educated white people this may be true. However, many other kinds of relationships exist that create families and communication is not always verbal or equal in skill. Can these relationships work. Yes, particularly if neither individual cares whether they will grow within the relationship or work on things as a team. sometimes two silos make an effective couple and parents to children. i’m sort of surprised at this article. i continue to be miffed out how arrogant our educated people have become about their so called knowledge and understanding of the world.
