Midweek Mental Greening

I used to be into yoga. Like, really into yoga. So much so that a few of my friends teasingly called me “Yogi.” (Though, don’t misunderstand – I was nowhere near being the “accomplished practitioner” the name suggests. I just really liked yoga …

  1. Hi Alicia,

    Great article – thank you.

I have found that when I first start something that I have a lot of motivation and passion for it and that helps to keep my practice going for a while.

It is like the honeymoon period though – after a while others things come into my life or I get bored. My practice starts to tail off.

I find that the thing which takes me over this hump is having a regular routine – for yoga I get up half an hour earlier than usual. This means that I don’t have other “distractions” to take me off my practice.

Having time like this every day or 2 to 3 times a week and sticking to it, has been invaluable. I have been able to keep my yoga and meditation practice going for a long time and it is now a routine – I do it wherever I am, at whatever time.

    Many thanks,

    Piers

  2. @ Piers – That’s excellent advice! Having a routine is so important, and I think getting up earlier would work for me, too. One, it would mean less distractions (just like you said), and two, it would be the WHOLE reason I got up earlier, so, no flaking out! Haha. Thanks for chiming in :) and great site!

  3. Great article! I especially like your first suggestion of researching what you are getting into. There are so many styles of yoga ranging from calm and meditative to hot and active. I cringe to think of someone who hasn’t done their research going to a bikram class expecting to chant and meditate! They could walk away thinking that’s yoga, not what they were looking for.

  4. @ Julia – Thanks :) The mistake of not researching yoga beforehand was definitely one that I made several years ago. I thought, “Ooh, I’m going to start doing yoga. It will be cool.” LOL, needless to say, I had a lot to learn!

  5. Hi Alicia,

    Glad you liked my site…

I wish you well with your yoga practice and look forward to hearing how well you are coming on with it.

    May you be well,

    Piers
