Meditation doesn’t require making big life changes.

Meditation doesn’t require changing the way you eat. It doesn’t require changing your religion. And it doesn’t require ditching alcohol or becoming celibate, said Tobin Blake, meditation teacher and author of Everyday Meditation: 100 Daily Meditations for Health, Stress Relief, and Everyday Joy.

All you need is a few minutes out of your day. “Meditation can be the simplest of practices,” he said. “Meditation generally focuses on releasing thoughts about the past and future and becoming grounded in the present moment.”

For me the easiest way to relax/meditate is to concentrate on breath…your brain can think of only one thing at a time, although multiple succesive thoughts are sometimes confused with thinking of everything at once. Concentrate on the coolness of the air as it passes across the tongue and the warmth as it is exhaled. When the brain chatter comes back return to breath. You may only get a few seconds at a time at first but the more you continue to return to breath the longer the span between brain chatter and breath…

    Thank you for another insightful article. I particular like the part about reprogramming your thoughts through positive affirmations. The most effective way I’ve found to reprogram my thinking is through writing meditation.

    It is a variation of loving-kindness meditation that is used in various Eastern traditions. However, instead of reciting or listening to the affirmations, I write them out by hand. For some reason, it seems to dramatically alter our neural pathways. This is probably because there are multiple senses involved in writing

    I’ve found my behavior changing significantly within a matter of days, without any conscious effort. It also works best with a daily meditation practice.

  3. Great article and some great tips. Before I got started with meditation, I found that I put it off often. The thought of a daily practice was intimidating, and I worried about getting it “right.” What ended up working for me is that I spent some time reading the research over at Belleruth Naparstek’s Healthjourneys blog, reading up about the many benefits of meditation so that I was psyched to start. I also chose the right type of meditation for me, which was guided meditation. With guided meditation, I didn’t spend so much time worrying about whether I was meditating correctly, since there was a gentle nudge in the right direction.
