Only know one of the words in that title? A Twitter glossary is essential to this story on #unsuicide, so that’s where I’ll start.

  1. Thanks for the linkback and for providing this insightful view into how social media relates to suicide and mental health. In view of recent events, like the JustinTV and MySpace suicides. It’s an important question, and a very relevant one that we would do well to address.

I have added a link to this piece in the main body of my post under “Other Views” for those interested in different takes on what happened. Thank you again.

  2. Thanks, AV, I enjoyed your take too.

  3. “social media lets people disconnect as easily as they might connect – as with all forms of media.”

Excellent point. I think a social networking site like Twitter can (and has) do wonders for bringing people together on topics that are important to them. For such a sensitive subject like suicide or drug and alcohol abuse even- it helps people to realize that they’re not alone. It is unfortunate to think that there are people out there who abuse things like this though….

  4. Hey Sandra, that’s a great article – even for someone like me who’s been using Twitter for a while now a hashtag like #twestival totally went over my head.

Actually heaps of them do – there’s one in NZ at the moment that’s #s92a which is against a proposed (about to come into affect) Copyright Law there at the moment.

I recently created a dictionary for hashtags so that people could understand them (because even doing a search didn’t help sometimes). It’s linked in my name (don’t want to spam you) – so I’d love it if you added #unsuicide and a definition to the site. It would hopefully be a central place for people to find out what it means and become involved.

I’d love to feature #unsuicide on the front page if you create it so people can see it straight away.

  5. Thanks Andrew! I emailed about adding to the dictionary.

  6. Hi Andrew, is this still current?
