  1. I’d hate to think of the field trying to function entirely without IRB’s. However, their recommendations (especially numbers 1 & 3) are very good. Recommendation #2 sounds great, but will require exquisite creativity to pull it off.

    I was once involved in a study that an IRB held up because we wanted to take children out of the classroom for one hour–in collaboration with their teachers’ agreement and schedule. Their decisions can be very frustrating at times.

    Another home run article!

    Some institutions are trying to standardize where you go to obtain training in ethics and protection of subjects in research. Many institutions use the University of Miami based services of the Collaborative IRB Training Initiative. I had to take their online training before advancing in my doctoral dissertation research.
