3 Fascinating Facts About Our Brilliant Brains

Our brains do a lot of work behind the scenes to help us function and thrive. But we largely know this already.

What might surprise you are the details of this work. For instance, as neuroscientist David Eagleman writes in his book Incognito: The Secret Lives of the Brain:

Your brain is built of cells called neurons and glia—hundreds of billions of them. Each one of these cells is as complicated as a city. And each one contains the entire human genome and traffics billions of molecules in intricate economies. Each cell sends electrical pulses to other cells, up to hundred of times per second. If you represented each of these trillions and trillions of pulses in your brain by a single photon of light, the combined output would be blinding.

The cells are connected to one another in a network of such staggering complexity that it bankrupts human language and necessities new strains of mathematics. A typical neuron makes about ten thousand connections to neighboring neurons. Given the billions of neurons, this means there are as many connections in a single cubic centimeter of brain tissue as there are stars in the Milky Way Galaxy.

Below are several other interesting and surprising facts about our brains from Eagleman’s Incognito.

  1. An absolutely amazing book!!

  2. This article confirms what I have come to believe after researching so much about OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder)…the brain sure has a mind of its own!

    • Hi, how did I over-come many mental conditions crewated at birth and from a near drowning relating to schizophrenia, ocd, bipolar, ptsd, anxiety, depression and severe learning disabilites?
I didn’t have the ability to think about these things which means not being able to wonder what just happened or to look into the future to see what is to come.
My brain had failed to me the ability to think, all I had was my five senses and this wonderful ability to use my imagination which is related to being an autistic savant. When faced with a challenge, conflict or problem I would see an image which helped to understand what I needed to do.
Which is acutally how the brain works in the first few years of our life. Only this ability has stayed with me my whole life.
You have the ability to change any mental problem, you need to realize, the brain feeds the mind with what the mind spends the most time on.
Imagine buying books, watching videos, talking to people and researching the internet with all your free time to learn about climbing mountains.
The moment you stop thinking climbing a mountain, your brain will send you an impulse or something to get you thinking about it again.
Look at everything you do in day. How many things can you do while having a conversation? You may be surprised to learn your day consist of nothing but habits. What is a habit? Its anything you can do without having to think about how to do it.
So, OCD, change one thing about everything you do. This will open your five senses, boost your imagination, and get you to stop thinking about other things and will stop the free flow of thoughts when your mind isn’t thinking.
All things are created from the imagination, so, do you believe you have it all figured out? I don’t, each day I find a better way to do something.
Do things today to make tomorrow a better day, this can only be done by finding new things to do. A repeat of the day before does nothing for tomorrow.

  3. Three psychologists, a metally ill group of people of all ages and my research has lead me to believe people think too much in order to believe this is how they are going to get throught their life.
We come into this life without the ability to think, yet, by the time we are done with adolescents a complete pattern of habits have shaped how we think.
I used an example to test this theory by holding up something in front of a group of people to see how long they could go without thinking first or getting a thought.
It is almost impossible to get a person not to think before doing anything or to wait and see what is about to happpen by keeping an open mind. So,I believe people have begin to intercept their five senses by thinking first before the five senses can finish processing information. Resulting in learning something that is unfinished, so they fill in the blanks to make it work for them.
I grew up without the ability to think, I was pulled by sounds and vision, it wasn’t until in my teens I begin to think a little more, yet, with all new things I experienced my five senses were the only things feeding my brain.
People mistake the mind as part of how the brain works, what people fail to understand the brain is an infant feed by the mind and the five senses, so when a person choses to listen to their thoughts, impulses and their own special way of thinking, they are going to develop mental problems, lose jobs, fail in school, fail at relationship and so much more.
I believe it wrong to get feelings or emotions by thinking alone. Our unique ability to do this stops us from actually engaging in an activity which is far more rewarding. We have to use the five senses to brain life into out existence.
Facebook is a great example of how not to socialize by a use of one of the five senses. If, you are a person who like isolation, this activity is for you. but, first let me say this, you were not like that in the first few years of your life and the person youn are today doesn’t define the true you.
The day we start using the five senses with an open mind will be the day America learns how to make things come to life. We have a very powerful ability which can fix our problems, if, we will only stop thinking about everything.
