A few weekends ago, I was intrigued to see this story in the New York Post: “The ultimate star perk is forbidding eye contact.” According to the Smoking Gun, singer Katy Perry’s contract covering her driver provides that the driver isn’t supposed to “stair” (sic) at her in the rear-view mirror.
The piece notes that there have been many similar rumors over the years — that people were prohibited from making eye contact with Luke Perry, Tori Spelling, Sylvester Stallone, and others.
When I read this story, I had a huge rush of intellectual pleasure. Because I think I’ve figured this out! Darshan.

I would rather suspect that Katy Perry does not want us to look in her eyes… because we would see there is no soul there, because she sold it for money and fame.
I think you can see soul or lack of through people’s eyes. I am often told I have sad eyes. (even by random strangers… and in the strangest places. Who woulda thought that “you have such sad eyes” is a good pick-up line for a night club?). But fortunatelly, nobody said my eyes are empty so far. Maybe there is still hope for me.
There’s nothing spiritual about it. People avoid others’ gaze in an act of dominance. Don’t you remember high school? All the popular kids never make eye contact with people below them. It’s not about the soul, or “glow”. Even monkeys do it. It’s a way of communicating hierarchy, that’s all.
@VenusH your comment about katy perry makes it obvious that you missed the whole point of feminism… get real
What on earth does Katy Perry have to do with feminism?
Venus, your having “sad eyes” and an unflattering and obvious envy of wealth and fame, indicates your own lack of depth, or soul, not anyone else’s.
There are so many mysteries we have yet to uncover about the windows of our souls. Interesting hypothesis.
As a teacher ( Psychology), eyes are on us all day and we often return the eye contact. And yes, enegy depletion occurs. Correlation or cause/effect is to be determined.
I think you’re right about eye contact and energy draining, but that it’s not just the eyes, sometimes the sound of someone’s voice – if depressive or flat also drains energy. So it applies to all senses and some people rely on more sense than the others. In that way Katie Perrie creates a very visual image, so perhaps she does rely a lot on visual sense. But I also agree with VenusH on KP – she realises she is but human, just like the rest of us – and feels uncomfortable with the pedestal she’s been put upon. Her eyes reveal the truth.
“Stair” is spelled stare in this instance.
Most people in India avert their eyes in the presence of someone more important/richer/than them.It seems to be a form of respect. Draining energy I can beleive, so can a flat dead and dull voice…without inflection.
I think her driver isn’t supposed to stare at her in the rear-view mirror because he’s DRIVING, his eyes should be on the road.
Evidently she thinks she’s so hot that he’ll stare at her instead of the road. I don’t think there’s anything spiritual about that. Man, this post is wacky.
It looks like you’ve put a lot of thought into why you think other people have reason to feel certain ways. I try not to begin an observation by starting with a foundation as unprovable as the hypothesis I’m trying to pile on it. This commentary begs the question all the way down all the turtles holding up the Earth. I find it hard to figure out how psychology fits into any of this unless psychology is also something considered to be an opinion.
I am not above tradition but I hold no superstition so the term darshan as you are using it means nothing to me for I realize guru, gods, celebrity, totums are nothing more than terms some people might use which in the end mean nothing beyond that individuals perception (run on).
That’s the first ambiguous start with no basis in anything except “mother told me so science.” the second bit about draining energy, are you speaking metaphorically?
What energy and what is the mechanism used to transmit this energy? If energy is transmitted and received via the eyeballs, we need to take a deeper look at what eye biology, physiology, cellular respiration and such the stores, converts, projects and receives this energy. What is the frequency of the electromagnetic radiation? What methodology can we employ to measure the frequency and energy and where are the eye organs responsible in our bodies to do the conversion To adenosine triphosphate?
Soul is another problematic term, a real red flag that no real world conclusion is truly being sought. The soul (unless you’re talking about soul music) is just as ambiguous, it has no relevant meaning and would make my long ass comment here into an even longer ass. If you do believe in a soul you most likely would not have read this far anyway. Suffice it to say, soul is an illusion of the brain, when brain function ceases so goes the soul although it would be lovely while enesthisized to be able to have my soul go to work for me to earn money and not have to have 529,000 woman still die in child birth each year because the human brain has evolved this far to be able to have blogs like this whereas if we were just spirits doing the thinking there’d be no need for a physical anything or at least we could just be born like a spirit queef and bring life to a mud ball.
There are plenty of reasons I can think of as to why people would as to avoid eye contact and plenty more purely annecdotal ones meaning my reasons. I personally avoid eye contact in large crowds to stifle a panic attack due to some irrational fears I am challenged with from time to time. I’ve preformed before thousands of people at a time but when it comes to meeting strangers backstage at time I can get very shy and not want to make eye contact. Being bashful, ashamed, smitten, unsure, incredibly attracted to, not in the mood to talk to someone, needing time to concentrate on a project and not be distracted worrying if someone is staring at me as if they need something from me are all reasons I would have for wanting to,avoid eye contact. There are also many psychological and physiological disorders or temperaments that can cause this none of which would I jump to the conclusion of a mythiological succubus.
I could say that when I read writings such as this where the author and commentors appear to me to not even think, challenge, understand or reflect on their conjecture it drains me. However, it would only drain me if I choose to take the time to tickity-type as I have so chosen to do this time. Usually, I just say, meh and concentrate on things I actually care about. But, from time to time I’ll do what I consider wasting my reasoning on such a blog but, even then, there’s no transfer of energy from the blog to me or me to the blog and after 46 years of staring deeply into the eyes of thousands upon thousands of people, animals, binoculars, buildings, mirrors, liquid laundry detergent, I have yet to be energized or depleted of energy.
Having a self revelation is a wonderful thing, for that I am happy for you (which I’m sure is of no consequence) but, as far as why people put “no eye contact” in their rider, the only way to get an answer is to ask them. As for pinning it on darshan, soul, eyeball energy, chi, and other such pseudo science, that falls into the realm of “show me or blow me.”
It’s simply megalomania
these people think they are better than us when their just luckier
