Lobotomies for All

How could the entire modern medical profession get behind and approve of a procedure for over 30 years that involved sticking an ice pick through your upper eye sockets, into your brain, and rotating it?

Amazingly, it did, from the 1930s until the 1960s.

  2. If you don’t mind me asking, Howard, how do you feel about the documentary and how it turned out for you?

  3. the doctor who developed the lobotomy was murdered by one of his lobotimized patients. The doctor’s last name was Moniz. He actually won the Nobel prize for his new treatment

  4. You mentioned the not-infrequent use of psychiatric medications as a way of “treating” difficult children. I agree that this a problem, but after more than 20 years working with children and adolescents in locked inpatient psychiatric facilities, I also want to point out that it is almost mandatory for young people who are hospitalized to be started on psych meds in order to have the insurances pay for their stay. And this is whether or not the meds are warranted. Appalling? You bet.

  5. There was just a show on our PBS station called “The Lobotomist” about this guy Freeman. His youngest patient mentioned on the prgram was only 4 years old. How sad.

There was also a woman whose mother had been “treated” by Freeman with his “lobotomoy” (which was esentially hammering ice picks into the brain via the eye socket and swishing it around) who feels her mother was healed. Her mother had tried to smother her, and after her “operation”, which Freeman decided she needed after 1 hour hour session, her mother was much happier and less agressive. To this woman, her mother had indeed been cured.
