Whatever you do, DO NOT think of an elephant right now!

Seriously.

Don’t think about elephants, or big floppy elephant ears, or elephants at circuses, or elephants in the wild.

Now, be honest: you totally just thought of an elephant. Didn’t you?

That’s exactly how I felt all week when I tried to stay away from the internet.

When I opted to spend a week away from the internet and other technological devices, I expected my brief affair with the IRL (“in real life”) world to whisk me away into romantic oblivion.

Sadly, that was not the case.

  1. Great article. I know I often times find myself frustrated with certain technologies.

  2. i totally needed this!

  3. I am so glad that I do not have issues with being able to disconnect. People who need to “know” all the time seem odd. Why do you have to know what everyone else is doing all the time? Too nosy? What about being able to reflect at your own life and yourself? People are way too distracted. They also need to have public attention by placing their whole life online for others to read. I may be old fashioned, but I like privacy.

  4. hey w1sdomw1ns:
i completely agree with you. but i don’t think people are nosy so much as they just want to feel like they’re accomplishing something. social mediums like facebook and twitter cause people to have this constant need to be “up to date” and if they’re not, they’re missing out on some level of social bonding that everybody else is partaking in. it’s the illusion that everyone lives and breathes online, and the time you spend away from it is time wasted. it’s weird, how people get caught up in a fake online world, and how it can soon become a reality to people who spend far too much time online and not enough time experiencing things in person.
