15 Quotes that Motivate and InspireI recently joined “The Psychology Network” on LinkedIn and have been enjoying the discussion among mental health professionals (since I’m not really one, but pretend to be all the time).

Especially intriguing was the discussion thread called “What are some of your favorite quotes that have motivated and inspired you?” They are quotes that they share with patients or with each other, or that they just think are cool and sound good. Here are just 15 from the 70 or so responses:

“Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” –Hilary Cooper

“If you can keep your wits about you while others are losing theirs and blaming you, the world will be yours.” –Rudyard Kipling

“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” –Attributed to Confucius

“When you come to a fork in the road, take it.” –Yogi Berra

“Courage is the power to let go of the familiar.” –Raymond Lindquist

I know, far too many..oh well. The last two are very powerful to me, especially the one by Lindquist; the familiar relates to illness and the planned future compared to the now known future. I have an incurable neurological disease and I collect quotes. How many times I have related a quotation to a fellow sufferer, along with my interpretation. Quotations are so thought provoking and each time you read one it speaks with a different voice; the voice of the moment. I have pages and pages on my laptop desktop.

This one is my current email signature quote: “But life’s not the breaths you take, breathin’ in and out, that gets you through the day…but the moments that take your breath away.” –George Strait, Take Your Breath Away

  9. “The problem with quotes on the Internet is that it is hard to verify their authenticity”

    -Dalai Lama

“Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned.”
    -Buddha

    Love your response ‘BasicPoke’

  14. “This is how it works: You’re young until you’re not; you love until you don’t. You try until you can’t. You laugh until you cry, you cry until you laugh; and everyone must breathe, until their dying breath.” ~Regina Spektor

  15. The cure for anxiety & stress from a country doctor: “If it is going to rain, let it.”

    NATIVE AMERICAN FOLK TALE:

A grandfather explains to his grandson that he has two wolves inside him. One wolf fills him with hope & reminds him how wonderful his life is, & the other fills him with doubt & convinces him that nothing is worth the effort. The grandson asks, concerned for his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?”

The grandfather replies, “WHICHEVER ONE I FEED.”

    Try, try & try again.

    Love doesn’t hurt.

Paraphrased: Other people’s opinion of me is none of my damn business. (Helpful to me as I’m a major people-pleaser & have a hard time with boundaries & saying “No” to others requests even if they are detrimental to my well-being.)

“NO” is a complete sentence. (Therapist told me this as I would feel I had to have a major reason to not fulfill everyone’s request & would give elaborate excuses as to why I couldn’t do something. It seemed like even if I were going on a moon launch, people could still figure out how I could babysit their kids or if I was cash-strapped, still loan them money, etc.)

  16. “Milk is for babies. When you grow up you have to drink beer.” -Arnold Schwarzenegger

  17. I love this quote simply because I need it so much! “Pride goeth before a Fall”

  20. I like the Tilstoian comment!

  21. Carrie Fisher didn’t say that quote about resentment, it’s from Alcoholics Anonymous.

  22. “He is a sane man who can have tragedy in his heart and comedy in his head.”
    G. K. Chesterton

“Normal is a city in Ohio.”
    Dr. Daniel Amen
(I know that Dr. Amen is, quite likely, not the first to have made some version of this statement. His version is one that I can correctly attribute, so his is the one that I quote.)

  23. Someone that knows no love is hungrier than someone who is starving -Mother Theresa

  24. “When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves”
from the wise and wonderful Victor E Frankl

  25. Awesome. Made my day

  26. This one is for you…Casper….I have found it comforting with my son’s battle with AML for the last 2 years….not sure of author…”Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain” I too collect quotes to help cope & deal. God Bless!

“The best way to knock a chip off someone’s shoulder is to give them a pat on the back.” (?)

“Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.” (Einstein)

“Everything will be ok in the end. If it’s not ok,it’s not the end.” (?)

One for perfectionists to live by: “Leap and the net will appear.”

One for women to live by: “Dull women have immaculate houses.”

“Sometimes when I look at my children, I say “Lillian, you should have stayed a virgin.” (Lillian Carter)

  29. And another favorite:

“We wouldn’t care what people thought about us if we realized how seldomly they did.” I’ve seen this attributed to Bill Cosby

  30. These are great quotes about life. I definitely feel a bit inspired/motivated now.
