Many people include some dose of caffeine in their morning routine, relying on coffee, tea, or soda to give them a boost to start the day. Unfortunately, new research shows that for many regular caffeine users the boost does not actually take place. The …

Coffee Doesn’t Help You Wake Up

  1. I’ve long suspected this was the case, as coffee doesn’t seem to do much for me in the morning (but nonetheless has become a part of my daily routine for many, many years now).

If you want a boost from caffeine, or probably from any drug, you shouldn’t take it regularly. This is common sense, but it’s good to see research backing it up (again).

  2. Well, as usual, the devil is in the details. I took a closer look at the study,as I wondered if they were saying that if you have one cup of coffee in the morning, you are still in withdrawal the next day.

They didn’t actually study that. They were looking at people who drink more than three cups per day.

The odd thing was that the long term withdrawal people, who had not had caffeine for quite some time, showed no positive effect from the caffeine. The overnight withdrawal peope showed improvement, but that only got them back to normal. This is the part of the result that the article focuses on.

I think its more interesting that you get nothing unless you are in a deficit state, at least based on these people’s tests. That part is kind of hard to believe. But they gave them the caffeine in some sort of fruit drink, so they didn’t know they were supposed to feel better. Maybe it’s the physical reaction to a hot drink that gives us that initial glow.

From time to time I have experimented with grapefruit juice instead of green tea, and really haven’t felt any worse – or better.

Some day maybe somebody will test the “one cup of green tea in the morning” people like myself. Then again, maybe not.

  3. I guess I’ll have to stop drinking coffee for the mean time. It no longer gives me any kick even with different numbers of cup. It’s like what happens when you drink the same medicine where in the bacteria is already immune. No effect.

  4. well, worthy of a trial!

  5. Yes, that’s my case too. I was thinking that I needed to increase the amount on coffee I need to drink in order to have it’s effects useful again. Nevertheless, it’s already part of my day to drink coffee, may it keep me awake or not.

  6. For me ,even if I drink a cup of coffee in the
morning -very often -it may not keep me awake.
I don’t increase the dose of coffeine because
I do not want to be affected by side effects.
I am very happy because I was not addicted -in
    my life-to drugs,to alcohol,to persons,to forfeits
to nicotine and I will not be.I am very strong and
for me -the coffee it is not indispensable.
In our brains are all the neurohormones for to be
    happy,lucid ,intelligent and active persons.

  7. Coffee does not have any effect on me whatsoever. I can drink it in the morning, or at night, and I even tried drinking 2 coffees late at night, to stay awake (I had to study) and that didn’t work either. Also, I tried redbull once, and after 3 hours I was soooo sleepy I couldn’t keep my eyes open.
Even though I tend to drink at least one coffee everyday, I’m not addicted to it. When I go on vacations, or even holidays, I never drink it. And I don’t feel a need to drink it…
Always wondered why caffeine doesn’t have effect on me, and when I saw the article, I thought it explained it, but I didn’t start to drink coffee that many time ago, so that my body would be, by now, adjusted to it. coffee never had effect on me… and sometimes it bothers me.

  8. i AM WRITING AN ARTICLE FOR MY HIGH SCHOOL NEWSPAPER ON COFFEE. i WAS HAPPY TO FIND THIS ARTICLE BECAUSE IT REALLY HELPED FINISH IT OFF. tHIS WILL HELP INFORM PEOPLE OF THE TRUTH ABOUT THAT “ENERGY BOOST” YOU GET.

  9. I don’t think this study is the only reason.

I mean, I used to NEVER take caffeine but on the rare cases I did, it did not keep me awake.

Now I take too much and well, that’s another story.

  10. so this clearly isn’t from the fact that most regular coffee users don’t sleep enough.

  11. But I barely use caffeine, and still it has no effect whatsoever on me. My doctor said it must because I have ADHD that it actually works reverse on me, is that possible?

  12. Oh my, we must do something about this horrible, addictive drug. Imagine the effect on the children as they suffer the effects of being raised by addicted parents.

Write your congressman, we must extend the drug war to combat this poison.

  13. I was looking for info about why caffine does nothing for me. I no longer drink soda (for at least 5 years now) and I never liked coffee. I’ve tried those 5 hour energy things and I feel like I can fall asleep and hour after I drink one. I have recently tried coffee again, still hate the taste and it did nothing for me. I thought I would be into hyper drive since I don’t normally use caffine. I’ve tried it on 3 different occasions and like the energy drinks, I was ready for bed in about an hour. I know I do not sleep normally but that is the normal for me. I have always been a light sleeper and every noise wakes me. As I’m getting older, I know I need more sleep since mid afternoon/early evening I’m fading. Guess I’ll look into something to make me sleep better instead.
