There is ongoing debate across the country about the type of insurance coverage that people with psychological disorders receive. For many people, insurance comes up short in paying for complete treatment. Those struggling with eating disorders often have serious difficulty with this since the cost …

Dear Mr. Meek,
Your article mentioned how Renfrew assisted patients by the contracted rate they had with insance companies. If this is the case, then why did we pay $39,600.00 for 30 days at Renfrew for our daughters residential treatment and our insurance paid the negotiated rate of $15,600.00 for 30 days. Renfrew refused to give us the same adjusted rate the insurance paid. This diffence in fees is absolutely unbelievable and I need to know how to fight this with Renfrew.
Thanks
Carol
I am a recovering bulimarexic and in treatment, insurance ran out after about a week and a half. Eating disorders are the only behavioral disorder that requires an estimated seven years to recover from an eating disoder, thirty days is nothing. The biggest problem with these centers, including Refrew is they spend too much time looking for a cure for an eating disorder, the eating disorder is only the surface and there is no miracle cure or treatemnt. People have to learn to accept love and to feel love for themselveS. Not an easy task for any therapist ans family and especially the client. It is not an overnight thing, but it is treatable. That is outrageous that people are being taken advantage oflike that! When I was i the hos[ital, we only had to wait on the insur. to run out because it run out before we got better. One girl went home at 6o pounds and being fed by a tube in her nose. I want to take an active part in trying to conivnce insurance comps to provide more funds for ed treatment!
I strongly agree that there is a huge difference in the care that someone will get from a health care issue and a mental health issue. I mean I have back problems and also an eating disorder and manic depression and I get more care and concern for my back problems than I ever thought of getting for my mental health. All I get is a lot of medication that my insurance doesn’t even really cover so really it doesn’t pay to have a mental issue, really though most of the world does suffer from disorders. I have found insightpros.com to be very helpful to me.
I need to check myself into a treatment program because for 4 long years i have been bulimis and occasionally anerexic. I need this help more than anyone even knows but i have no health insurance. I am willing to pick up an insurance plan but not if I still have to pay 30,000 for the treatment. I am 23, I do not have financial support from anyone but myself. Does anyone have any advice or know of a company who will help cover me?? thanks!
Consider this: being male, with a mood disorder, bulimia/anorexia for over a decade, and substance abuse. Now, query the internet to find treatment centers, quality centers, that will take you, and your graduate student insurance plan. No, you won’t McLean on the list, nor Menninger. One won’t take you because you’re male, the other costs 50,000$ for a 30 day stay.

Matt- I’ve been to both Renfrew in Philidelphia & River Centre Clinic in Slyvania, Ohio. Although Renfrew is known as one of the top treatment centers for eating disorders, River Centre residential & day treatment was almost as good AND they allow males. Not only that, but they changed their payment thing to correlate with my insurance company. I think it’s cheaper as well. Hope that helps!
Well trying to get longer treatment for my wife is not easy due to my health insurance. Is’nt easy for me and the treatment hospital for eating disorders. We are always figthing to get critical treatment for her. They failed us because the medical board are not trained enough to make these judgement calls. They go by national averages not individual needs. My wife has relapsed aleast three times because of not long enough care as intense inpatient and outpatient treatment. The hospitals are willing to back me up. My wife could die because of their judgement. Thank for listening.
