Suicide Risk Amongst College Students

Suicide Risk Amongst College StudentsSuicide is a serious concern amongst young adults, and the isolation and loneliness of some college students’ experience appear to be some of the factors that may trigger the behavior. Suicide is the second leading cause of death amongst college-aged students.

Suicide is most commonly viewed as a symptom of severe depression. Depression of this nature often goes undiagnosed in a young adult, because they don’t know what it is, or have no energy or motivation to seek out help. But other risk factors can also be in play.

In a survey of 1,085 University of Maryland college students, 12 percent said they had contemplated suicide. Eight out of 10 students reported having had a depressed mother. Other risk factors the researchers identified included: exposure to domestic violence, feelings of being unloved, depression and prolonged separation from family and friends, triggering anxiety.

  1. I understand the posting because I have been in college for a little over twelve years and at times a felt and feel like giving up and wondering if it will all be necessary in the end. I have also felt like the world have stopped and what was the purpose of me pushing on. I had to learn had to cope with these feeling and speak about these feelings so could develop my self-esteem.

  2. I am currently a college student and I can relate to the stress of school. It can be very overwhelming at times. During this journey, I have found that you have to surround yourself with positive people that are supportive. It is also important to have someone to talk too about your stressful events. Having the ability to talk about your problems can be very helpful.

  3. I’m a senior nursing student.I do feel stressed at times, but not enough to become depressed let alone become suicidal. When I do start to feel stress I use different coping mechinsms to help relive my stress. I have always had a very strong positive support system growing up. Neither of my parents were never depressed. I do feel isolated from my friends at times and that’s mainly because nursing school is very time consumming, demanding, and disiplined. Most of my friends aren’t in nursing school so sometimes they don’t understand when I say I can’t do certain things. I do get upset when I can’t hang out, but hey all of my hard work will pay off in the end.Two key items to becomming successful is stay positive and surround yourself around positive people. Thanks for your time have a nice night.

  4. I lost a friend to suicide many years ago and it was devastating. I encourage anyone who is experiencing feelings of depression and desperation to reach out to their loved ones, professionals and hotlines designed to give them a place to talk.

  5. I am a recent nursing student and recently withdrew because I could not take the stress, nor open abuse from faculty. I have lost six years of my life with pre-requisites and waiting lists and am left such a mess I can’t even hand out aspirin without making a mistake. The hard thing about it is while my mistakes are my own, I was in some ways more competent than my professor who doesn’t even know CPR, and I was becoming worse as I progressed due to my own emotional deterioration. I have no idea what I am even qualified to do and would rather die than set foot in a hospital again. Goody for you, senior nursing student, your complete lack of empathy is a reminder of the favoritism shown in nursing school. Just don’t work in mental health.
