  1. Every funny person about whose background I’ve ever learned anything has suffered – healthy humor is the healthiest coping mechanism around, but like any muscle, it only gets strong when someone uses it a lot.

    One of Bill Cosby’s early routines was about how when “the giant”, his alcoholic father, came home, Bill and his brother would hide until The Giant passed out, then go through his pockets for whatever money was left.

    Mark Twain suffered a terribly tragic life, too – he outlived his wife and most of his children – and the humor he left us has been a gift to the world ever since.
