In a recent #mhsm (mental health and social media) chat on Twitter, we talked about the #mhm2010 hashtag used during Mental Health Month May 2010. Many organizations and tweeps successfully used it to share mental health information with a much wider network. During our wrap-up discussion on keeping momentum, other hashtags were mentioned. I volunteered to make a list and here’s what I found in use as of June 2. If you know of more, or start a new one, please leave a comment.
If you’re new to hashtags and Twitter, learn more in this brief video. Use Twitter Search or other tools to follow hashtags.
Most are to tag relevant tweets at any time, but some are used for weekly events like #mentalhealthmonday, and chats on different topics. Check the schedules and use Tweetchat to join in.
Many tags are focused on a specific mental health issue. However, a key lesson learned from #mhm2010 is that using a popular, short hashtag means info reaches more readers, gets retweeted, and connects more activists than specialized tags. #endstigma has been suggested as a new gathering place, and #mentalhealth is one that’s already commonly used.

Thanks for this. I never knew how hashtags worked as a way to gather information really, in the sense that specific hashtags are used for conversational purposes. I just use hashtags relevant to my tweets (eg. recently used #dissociation because my tweet was relevant to that) without taking care to what other people tweet with that hashtag. I had an embarrassing situation in this respect a while back, when I used #BADD for Blogging Against Disablism Day, when that hashtag was mostly used to mean “bad”.
The autism community also uses #asd for Autism Spectrum Disorder.
This is a great list, thanks for pulling it together!
Thanks for the comments! Astrid, that’s a really good point about context.
