Our friends organizing the mental POWER Prague film festival wanted me to let you know that they’ve extended the submission deadline for films. What is this film festival? (Keep in mind that mental disorders are thought of differently in different cultures, and are referred to with different terminology, so please don’t take offense at the specific language used below.)

[It] is an international film festival of (non-)actors with a mental or combined handicap organized by HENDAVER, o.s. The festival shows feature films in which exclusively people with a mental and combined handicap act.

The main idea of the festival is to create the conditions for artistic self-fulfillment of handicapped people and thus to take part in their mental development. In addition to that, this activity opens a brand new possibility of social integration of the handicapped. The festival came into existence in order to help these people get out of their everyday routines and enable them to experience moments of fame and artistic activity. It is a unique project which hadn‘t taken place in the Czech Republic or abroad before. There are other festivals which monitor everyday life of handicapped people – theatre, musical or documentary film festivals. However, a festival of feature films hadn‘t existed before, although feature film is exactly the genre in which handicapped people can ACTIVELY fulfill their artistic talent and perception. Feature film is a space in which music, dance and theatre come together, being the artistic aspects which are the most natural and often the only way of communication.

The aim of the festival is:

1. to create such conditions and environment that are typical for film festivals of professional actors
2. to enable handicapped people to experience ceremonial and noble moments among people without any handicap
3. to show healthy people that these people are totally equal to them in the artistic creation and perception
4. to convince the general public of this ability of theirs and convince handicapped people that they have an equal and solid position in the society in the terms of arts

Sound interesting? It did to us too, so if you’re interested in submitting a short film (30 minutes maximum in length), you can learn more about the festival by visiting their website at the link below. (Ignore the submission deadline — it’s been extended but you should try and get your DVD film submission in as soon as possible.)
