There was this study that showed scans of patients after they underwent surgery to remove brain tumors. After the surgery they were put in a guided meditation practice and subsequent scans showed the healing of the damaged cells was in direct correlation to when the patients practiced meditation. Its amazing how much meditation can impact your life but people just want instant benefits so they fail to stick with it long term - which is when its true benefits materialize.

Good article - you have to find way to let go of negative things - meditation, and meditation music can help. From China we known about this for over 2000 years before America was discovered. Happiness is a choice.

I think many people are put off a little just by the word meditation and assume it has to be a full on, cross legged event. I think the key is not to force it, starting slow - just a few minutes a day works for a lot of the people I see. It truly does bring about so many benefits - it might not solve your problems - but it puts YOU in a better place to deal with them.

I also believe that meditation does not have to be expensive. But in the past, I also experienced some problems when I was a beginner in meditation. I couldn't focus long enough to be able to finish a session. I researched online and found a lot of meditation music available on the internet. I tried using it and it solved all my meditation problems. It really helps me concentrate better on my task.

I took up transcendental meditation over 15 years ago when I was in my late thirties. I have certainly benefited from meditating ever since.

Interestingly enough, I have a clear memory of having spent the week before learning how to meditate on jury duty on an upsetting case, which had left my mind buzzing with the details. After a weekend meditating, all the 'inner chatter' had gone and I felt totally relaxed.

Another thing - I don't know whether it was a coincidence, but before learning, I suffered every month with painful periods - afterwards, never again!

I am now in the early stages of looking at ways of improving memory. Until I read this blog, I hadn't really thought about the possible role of meditation in that. I'm definitely going to investigate now! Thank you.

Yes, have read Daniel Goldman's books on meditation and neuroscience. Fascinating stuff. I was particularly impressed by the Dalai L's ability to interact with high level scientists. He's a smart guy!

I'm always glad to find more people who are aware of -- and wanting to share -- the benefits of meditation now being shown through neuroscience.

The Dalai Lama himself (a rather religious person, I think we'd all agree) has been asking Western scientists to take a good, hard look at what happens to the brain with meditation -- and then, to share the information with people who would otherwise simply dismiss meditation as something "religious" or "foreign."

As a neuropsychologist, looking at this research is intriguing and, more and more, convincing. Even more compelling is the difference I see in the people I work with in my psychotherapy practice.

Thanks for sharing the study. If I may, I invite your readers to visit http://www.ReWireYourBrainForLove.com for a free mindfulness meditation download.

Such a great information. I agree with with this message. Meditation is very important thing in every humans life. Doing meditation keeps will keeps our body in a balanced condition and gives us clear mind, keeps us energetic always. It makes our brain to think in a smarter way.

I'm sorry you feel that way, AdamK. Unfortunately, all I can do is quote the articles I read -

<a HREF="http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/05/090512134655.htm" rel="nofollow">"But what can one do to build a bigger brain? Meditate."</a>

- which ideally will lead to discussions rather than anyone feeling as if they have or have not received adequate reporting. I am not a reporter. I'm a blogger who shares linked and quoted information that I hope will spark conversations.

Please also see my comment above, which quotes another part of the original Science Daily article that clearly states researchers don't yet know if the meditation caused more regional gray matter and volume in specific areas, or if the people who meditated already had larger volumes, and understand that this wasn't ignored information.

"...meditation is also a way to build a bigger brain."

The study did not find this.

Correlation is not necessarily causation.

That meditation causes the brain differences is NOT a conclusion compelled by this study. It is one possible, unproven, hypothesis.

This is typical sloppy reporting.
