At least they can get help rather than just being on the street.
Why they would stop this program because it is working, or needed is bizarre.

Can you imagine shutting down the fire department because people keep calling when their house is on fire?

While the thought of abandoning a child is horrifying, the families of these children have themselves been abandoned by our healthcare system.I am the parent of a mentally ill adult, and a child (adopted) who has had a (hopefully temporary) hallucinatory reaction to a prescription for ADHD. It is almost impossible to find anyone who takes their state insurance. There are many days when, with my older child, I just wanted to get into my car and drive til the doors fell off.Brings new meaning to the phrase,"Abandon all hope, ye who enter here." We spend a fortune in a war, and flying to the moon. What about mentally ill children? They are the future homeless and incarcerated of tomorrow!

Thanks for the update, 314159pi. While IMHO it makes sense that it only applies to infants, I'm sure crunched state budgets that had something to do with it.

I'm hoping SCHIP is having an impact on low-income families with such needs. Anybody know if it has?

the ny times just broke the story that the nebraska legislature changed the safe haven law today. the new law goes into effect on saturday.
now the law does not protect "children" but instead infants under 30 days old.
