I lost about 15 pounds in college. I was too busy to remember to eat. People started telling me I looked too thin. I didn't believe them until I got sick and didn't have the energy to recover. Now I'm on the path to regain a healthy weight. Freshman 15 in reverse.

Wow, gaining 8 pounds during the first year. I wonder what happens during the next couple of years - will the weight come down again or does it continue to rise. I'd guess the latter.

And I agree with justlookin - its the dietary choices and lack of exercise that is the reason there. Maybe there could be some incentives, like competitions or something, for freshmen students to take care of their health?

A healthy lifestyle involves good eating (and drinking) habits and a lot of exercise. Simply put, if a college freshman is eating buffets all the time, drinking all the time, and not exercising to shed those calories, they're going to gain weight. It doesn't matter how "healthy" you're eating if you're packing on 15 pounds in your freshman year - you need to start making some lifestyle changes.

Don't be one of those girls everyone talks about with the freshman 15 lbs!!! Eating properly and maintaining a healthy mind can be difficult at college. One of the most important factors in eating at college is the cost of food. Most college students are poor and cannot afford to eat that. Even though, eating a healthy diet is important for your mind and body while learning. Some other tips for college freshman can be found at http://www.online-degree-enlightenment.com/blog/prospective-students/freshman-college-students-top-20-items-to-bring-to-school/ to help aid in your college experience.

I'm a male freshman. Am I worried about what I eat....yes. I try hard to make sure I don't eat all these high speed processes food choices and balance it out with the exercise of scootering a mile to get to classes. I'm definitely not worried about gaining weight since I could gain 50 lbs. and still be considered "normal" for my height.

The problem that most women in college have with eating is that FOOD IS EVERYWHERE. When you first register as a freshman, you are literally BOMBARDED with free pizzas at activities/dorms, etc. I gained a LOT of weight my first 2 years at school but lost it with a TON of exercise and some supplements. If you actually live in the area of your universities athletic complex, most universities allow students to use the weight room and track for free, that's how I lost a good portion of my weight.

[...] Top on the list of concerns for many students isn’t just the typical challenges of college—filled with entering a new environment, getting good grades, making friends and dealing with roommates—it’s the feared Freshman 15. While students might know that gaining 15 pounds their freshman year (according to research, the average is actually eight pounds) is by no means fact or foreshadowing, many still worry, seeing the added pounds as impending.
