Blogging for Mental Health

By Sandra Kiume
July 26, 2008

The (unofficial) 2008 Blogathon, or Day of Blogs, is underway on July 26 and 27. Dozens of bloggers have pledged to post every half hour for 24 hours, to raise money for charities including some great mental health organizations.

Life with Logan sends funds to 1-800-SUICIDE, while Jenny’s Light shines on postpartum illnesses via Jennifer at Fairly Ordinary. Renee of Genre Impaired supports the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, and psychotherapist Isabella Mori of the Change Therapy blog is raising money for the Canadian Mental Health Association. (Isabella also hosts the Carnival of Eating Disorders rounding up blog entries on the subject, see the next one on July 31.)

Four bloggers choose RAINN: the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network. They are a great help to many women (and men) through their telephone hotline and recently they’ve added the innovative, award-winning Online Hotline to their site. It’s a secure IM chat service offering support, info and referrals from trained volunteers (often survivors themselves). It operates noon-midnight EST every day, and is accessible worldwide. With more funds, they hope to offer 24/7 service.

More localized, the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center (BARCC) receives donations via Scheherazade in Blue Jeans. Writer Shira explains why she is a volunteer for the Center doing outreach and prevention, in a compelling blog entry. In it she says, “Grim as this is, the one thing all BARCC volunteers have in common is hope. If we didn’t believe that this sort of change was possible, we wouldn’t be here. I believe. Yes, even having gone through what I have. I believe that we can effect change.”

Please help these bloggers (and more) effect change today with blogging.

hey, thanks so much for the shoutout!

I blog about my book that helps readers to cope with medical crises. The cover holds praises from mental health and medical professionals, including an NIH researcher.

See http://itsmycrisisandillcryifineedto.blogspot.com/ and learn how to get free medication, free medical treatment, how to contact the leading practitioners for your medical problem, even how to travel more comfortably with disabilities!
