The Launch of Bipolar Beat

By John M. Grohol, Psy.D.
July 16, 2008

We’re happy to announce the launch of our newest blog, Bipolar Beat, a blog about bipolar disorder. It’s hosted by Dr. Candida Fink, M.D. and Joe Kraynak, co-authors of the popular book “Bipolar Disorder For Dummies.” They wrote a “Dummies” book about bipolar disorder? You bet they did, and it’s a good introductory read to the disorder and recommended for anyone looking to learn more about it, including:

  • The different categories and potential causes of bipolar disorder
  • How to select the right mental health specialist
  • Managing employment-related issues brought on because of the disorder
  • How bipolar disorder affects children
  • Advocating for yourself or a loved one
  • Planning ahead for manic and depressive episodes
  • Selecting the best medications for you—including alternative “natural” treatments
  • How to survive an immediate crisis situation
  • Identifying triggers and mapping your moods

The new blog will help people learn about new developments in bipolar (also known as manic depression), but also provide tips and techniques that can help you deal with this concern.

We hope you enjoy the blog. Don’t have bipolar? We plan on launching additional topical blogs in the weeks to come, including blogs on depression and ADHD.

Check it out: Bipolar Beat

My daughter was diagnosed with bipolar, but she doesn’t believe the diagnosis. Each of us who occasionally has to live with her believes the diagnosis. This should be a useful blog.

This is great! Thank you so much!

Thank you for this blog, keep it up !!

I’m sure this blog will be a lifeline to many. And I’d like to share a link to a powerful and affecting New York Times video feature in which attractive, likeable people with bipolar disorder speak frankly about the challenges of their illness–under their real names. It’s at http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/07/17/the-voices-of-bipolar-disorder/

Sounds great. When y’all read and write more about our “handicap?” hopefully the understanding will grow.

Hey, love your website. Thought you might like to know about a suicide pervention resource,

http://www.youmeandapollo.com/Suicide.html

It’s a freebie. Spread the word.

Hi, great to know such a resource is out there. The NY Times feature that Ms. Maynard mentions above is amazing.

Another resource… there is a new musical about bipolar disorder. It’s amusing the reactions I often get, but I’m serious! If you go to the NY Times feature and listen to Debra LaVergne’s interview, that’s very close to the plotline of “Next to Normal” - D.C./VA area, Nov. 21, 2008 - Jan. 18, 2009. nexttonormal.org

If you happen to go, let me know and perhaps we can meet. I always see us bipolar souls as kindred folk :o )
