Women Meeting Challenges

by Sandra Kiume
May 16, 2008

Don’t miss “Women Meeting Challenges-Making Change“, a full day event on domestic violence, May 17 9:00 to 7:00 in Woodbridge, Virginia. If you don’t live nearby, there will be videos on the web site later. Dynamo organizer Liletta Thompson has put together a big roster of speakers and performers that includes Carolyn Thomas (”The Lady Without a Face”), singer Kia Calloway, fitness coach and author Bridgette L. Collins, Demetra Reid of the mentoring group W.O.M.E.N.E.O., Inc, spoken word poet Chosen, and other great people. It’s a day to learn, share, network, and celebrate the courage of women ready to reclaim their lives.

Even more than that, it’s also a benefit. ACTS/Turning Points runs two domestic violence shelters that offer supportive programs to women and children in the critical transition days of escaping abuse. Shelters such as these (why not look up one in your area and make a donation?) offer vital services that help prevent violent crime by providing a safe bed while women and children work to find new housing, psychotherapy for PTSD or depression, jobs, child care, etc. Keep their doors secure by supporting this event.
