There are other hormonal depression issues in women than just postpartum depression. Perimenopause, menopause and even menstrual irregularities can wreak havoc on a woman's mental health. Women's hormones do seem to contribute to depression in a way that is unique to their gender. To imply that men's biology should be considered in a brochure on women's depression is rather baffling. In a brochure on women's depression, men's depression IS irrelevant. I don't see the problem there. In a world where women get flack for going to work and men get praise for not going to jail, I don't think men need or deserve a whole lot of coverage in a brochure ON WOMEN'S DEPRESSION.

Yes, I am a cranky, menopausal hormonal, mentally ill beyatch. None of my issues are relevant to men. Get over it.

These hormonal issues should be covered in any published brochure concerning depression in women.

Thanks for sharing this. What a disappointment that postpartum depression continues to get short shrift.

I agree... Which speaks more to the need to focus on reaching men maybe more so than women, when it comes to outreach and education about mental health issues such as depression. Such as this effort by the NIMH:

I agree with Dr. Grohol that men are just as susceptible to depression as women, but I believe men are just not willing to share the fact that they are depressed as willingly as women. In other words, what is unique to women is the idea that it is okay to talk about their feelings. Because of our cultural programming, men don't feel permitited to do so.
