“Ma has made herself sick with her hypochondria, like actually sick on the inside of her body. And even if that’s not true, being a hypochondriac is at the very least an illness in itself, a mental illness. Which is worse than having a kidney infection or a gallstone ’cause it can go on forever, and in the process you lose all your friends for being crazy.” - Michelle Tea, in her fantastic frenzied novel Rose of No Man’s Land.
So true.
In contrast, here’s a gaggingly idealistic portrayal of another world. Comforting supportive friends helping out in PSAs from SAMHSA: What a Difference a Friend Makes. Yes, what.

“Comforting Supportive Friends”
‘Gagging’ is a great word you used to describe the video ad at the ‘What a Difference…’ site. I had seen this once before. I had the same reaction then. What’s there can be more harmful than helpful.
I wanted to be fair so I just spent some time at the site. There is one PSA that I think is okay. The rest of the site has pages with words that say nothing, personal accounts that don’t even mention friends and friendship, on and on, and we are paying for this. It’s a government project/initiative.
Doc John, what can people do, how can we call the government to task, for putting out this kind of fluff when there is so many ways they can truly make a difference? Organizations supported by government funds as well? (Isn’t that a ludicrous term? The government doesn’t have money, it’s a clearing house for our money.)
Thanks for posting this and calling attention to it. All suggestions gratefully accepted.

How does that help relieve stigma and make a difference in a person with mental illness? There has to be a better way.
Ridiculous! Sure she agrees to go to the party now, but by Friday, she’ll change her mind and stay in bed. Argh! How ’bout some coping skills?
