1 in 4 US Teens Has a STD

In a large-scale national study released today by the U.S. CDC, researchers found that one in four teens has a sexually transmitted disease (STD). The study was an analysis of nationally representative records on girls ages 14 to 19 who participated in a 2003-04 government health survey.

The teens were tested for four infections: human papillomavirus, or HPV, which can cause cervical cancer and affected 18 percent of girls studied; chlamydia, which affected 4 percent; trichomoniasis, 2.5 percent; and genital herpes, 2 percent.

Only about half of the girls in the study acknowledged having sex. Some teens define sex as only intercourse, yet other types of intimate behavior including oral sex can spread some diseases.

Among those who admitted having sex, the rate was even more disturbing — 40 percent had an STD.

What more can I add to this, other than to say, “Use condoms!”

What are the rates of sexual abuse? It isn’t… Something like 1 in 4 is it? If so… Well… Sexual abuse might account for some of the prevalence.

It would be interested to know whether the STD rates are less prevalent in boys who (arguably) have lower rates of sexual abuse.

And of course sexual abuse could be a reason why people deny having had sexual intercourse. Especially when you have groups going around saying things like ’sexual relations before marriage makes you like a used toothbrush. would you use a toothbrush that lots of other people have used??’

i am 22yrs old,i just want to know,STD can spread while having sex to your partner?i am on a dillema, everyday there’s a color yellow coming out on my underwear,i don’t know if i am having an STD or just a side effect of my panty liner because i am using it everyday..i am shy going to the doctor..please reply on my email add

Yea uhhh if your partner is having sex with you… he is or has probably had sex with someone else too. So yea you most certainly can get an STD having sex with one person.

There is obviously more to know about this than the pharmaceutical companies would have us believe.. I think you made some good points.
