Depressed women wear more perfume

By Jennifer Bechdel

According to a recent study featured in the Journal of Arthritis and Rheumatism, women who are depressed may have a less sensitive nose than those women who are not depressed. The researchers also believe that due to their weakened sense of smell, these women may overcompensate by wearing too much perfume. Lastly, they found that women who are depressed are more likely to loose weight because a person’s sense of smell is highly correlated to a healthy appetite.

This article presented some interesting theories about biology and depression. However, I still have one question after reading it; what about the women who smell really, really bad? Are they more depressed than the women that put too much perfume on?
